'Big Snow' 1967. Funnel clouds reported in
southwest Chicago on January 24, 1967
prior to snow storm. Following the 'Big
Snow' the 1967 season was an extreme snow
season with snow falling on the first six
of seven days of February, which began
with 19 inches on the ground -- 9 inches
added by February 7. A short blizzard hit
on February 23 adding another 4.5 inches
of snow with 40 mph gusts and lightning
and thunder. Over 50 deaths indirectly
related to storm. The area's worst tornado
outbreaks to date followed on April 21,
1967.

one day was 3.8 inches on October
19, 1989. A three-day total including and
following this date totalled 6.3
inches.

Funnel
clouds were reported in southwest Chicago
where a building under construction
collapsed, killing one man and injuring
four others on January 24th, 1967. The
"Big Snow of 1967" began days later on
January 26, 1967.

tornado touched down southeast of Spring
Valley, IL on December 6th, 1951 where six
homes lost roofs or were severely damaged
as the tornado headed northeast toward
Mendota, IL, where it dissipated. Spring
Valley, IL is about 100 miles southwest of
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
