Serious urban flooding in 1987. Estimated damage $220 million to Chicago area. Severe thunderstorms recurred on August 16, 1987 with strong downbursts and 1-1.5-inch hail in northern Illinois. Wind gust of 80 mph toppled two tents at state fairground (Springfield) and injured 58 people.

'Big Snow' 1967. Funnel clouds reported in southwest Chicago on January 24, 1967 prior to snow storm. Following the 'Big Snow' the 1967 season was an extreme snow season with snow falling on the first six of seven days of February, which began with 19 inches on the ground -- 9 inches added by February 7. A short blizzard hit on February 23 adding another 4.5 inches of snow with 40 mph gusts and lightning and thunder. Over 50 deaths indirectly related to storm. The area's worst tornado outbreaks to date followed on April 21, 1967.

Trace snowfall has been reported on September 25, 1928 and September 25, 1942. Earliest measurable snowfall is 0.3 inches officially measured at O'Hare on October 12, 2006. The previous record was 0.2 inches October 18, 1972. Another 0.6 inches of snow fell on October 19, 1972. First snowfall greater than one inch in one day was 3.8 inches on October 19, 1989. A three-day total including and following this date totalled 6.3 inches.

        Latest First Snowfall in Fall Latest first snowfall (.3 inch) to occur in a Fall season was reported on December 16th, 1965. Flurries had fallen on November 18, 1965.

        Latest Snowfall in Spring

Latest snowfall (.2 inch) has been reported on May 11th, 1966. Some areas of the Chicago metro area reported 2 inches of snow from strong easterly winds. The latest official snowfall greater than one inch occurred May 1 and May 2, 1940 when 2.2 inches of total snowfall occurred.

        Earliest Tornado Reported

Funnel clouds were reported in southwest Chicago where a building under construction collapsed, killing one man and injuring four others on January 24th, 1967. The "Big Snow of 1967" began days later on January 26, 1967.

        Latest Tornado Reported

A tornado touched down southeast of Spring Valley, IL on December 6th, 1951 where six homes lost roofs or were severely damaged as the tornado headed northeast toward Mendota, IL, where it dissipated. Spring Valley, IL is about 100 miles southwest of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Mendota, IL is about 75 miles southwest of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
