Here's an Interface Checklist
If your websites, equipment or your information displays are user friendly, the following rules are required
to help make a common sense, intuitive, experience for visitors, customers and users.

Metaphors from the real world. For example, if you're in the grocery business, food icons should be in the computer or device display.

Direct Manipulation
(immediate visual response). If the machine doesn't do anything to indicate immediate response to a request, most people will think its broken.

See-and-Point
(instead of remember-and-type). Help the viewer with hints or predetermned options. Let them click away.

Consistency. A uniform look with logo, and color scheme works well in marketing and brings confidence of effectiveness in human-machine interface action. Menus and buttons are where you expect them.

WYSIWYG. What you see is what you get. How it looks on the screen is what it looks like when a letter or a photograph prints. What you see and hear on a video file is what shows on a DVD in a DVD player. What you hear on an MP3 is what you hear on a CD.

Feedback and Dialog. When you do something that has options, you are given clear (non-convoluted) instructions to confirm your next step. The most common, or in some cases, safest option, is assigned the default button. When a long process is underway, a progress graphic is displayed.

User Control. The user stays in control of the device. In cases where the feedback and dialog could be monotonous and a time-waster, the user has the control to give the 'not show again' command to feedback and dialog.

Forgiveness. If you make an error or change your mind, the computer or device can bring you back to the state before the decision and control was performed. A step backward, one-at-a-time (not total start-over), ability is best.

Perceived Stability. When all of the previous rules are implemented and there are no flickering monitors or noisy equipment, perceived stability is the result.

Aesthetic Integrity. It's inviting. It looks good.
