Total Gym
Total Gym equipment uses your own body weight for resistance on a gliding board. The higher the incline, the more the resistance. You increase the incline by easily raising the gliding board edge on an upright 'ladder.'
Force is transmitted differently through the body in a Total Gym during exercise because as the exerciser generates muscle force the glide board moves. Force is transmitted differently through the body when the body doesn't engage a fixed floor or seat like other exercise equipment. In most health club machines, force is transmitted through the body to the floor and/or fixed seating of the exercise machine.
The Total Gym provides another tool to condition the body. It is convenient, light weight and easily used and stored for a home gym situation. However, it still provides good resistance and a force path variety that other machines don't offer. Not to say that it is a total replacement for other machines, but it is a good added tool for many individuals -- for fitness, some rehab, and even serious sports performance.
Enduring leader, efi Sports Medicine President and CEO Tom Campanaro, founded the Total Gym Company with partners Dale McMurray and Doug Marino in 1974. Larry Westfall joined the partners and the four men developed the Total Gym in 1974.
