Maxwell, Brian ... a former marathon runner who created PowerBars, has died of a heart attack at age 51 collapsing at a post office and being pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital. Maxwell and his wife Jennifer established the PowerBar company in 1986, starting in their kitchen and growing into a company that they sold to Nestle SA in 2000 for $375 million. Maxwell was born in London March 14, 1953, and grew up in Toronto, competing for Canada as an international marathon runner. In 1977, he was ranked third in the world by Track and Field News. He developed the energy bar after dropping out of a marathon at 21 miles. Maxwell weighed 132 pounds, stood 5-foot-6, had a resting pulse rate of 50 and trained up to 130 miles a week in the early 1980s. His best marathon was 2:14:43 and he had personal bests of 14:13 for 5,000 metres, 29:35 for 10,000 metres and 62:56 for 20,000 metres.
