****High School Assembly Shows Reality of Drinking and Driving
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS, U.S.A., 1996 SEP 19 By Mark D. Bostrom. Apriori, Inc. Students at John Hersey High School will experience a swing of emotions Tuesday, September 24, 1996 at 9:00 a.m. First, they will witness the excitement of the introduction of the Homecoming Court. Next, they will be surprised by a simulated underage drinking party that ends with emergency room staff treating the trauma of the partygoers' serious DUI car crash. The presentation is played out by high school students, a real emergency room physician, Dr. Stanley M. Zydlo, and nurses and paramedics from Northwest Community Healthcare, Arlington Heights Fire Department, Mount Prospect Fire Department and Prospect Heights Fire Department. Producers and participants of the presentation hope that the memories of the scenes they see on this day will promote common sense and safety while students have fun this homecoming week.
The opening scene will show several students at a party, drinking and having fun in the center of the main gym. When it's time to go home, an argument over who should drive fails to keep the impaired driver from behind the wheel. Suddenly, the sounds of a car crash will be heard and the main gym will change to a busy emergency room. There students will watch as ER staff listen to the paramedic's radio announcement detailing the injuries of incoming patients and prepare for their arrival. When the last radio call is completed, the first patient will burst through the doors. The impact of the injuries are serious. Students will witness the medical staff coping with the injuries professionally and emotionally.
The students will learn about the extent of the injuries. The props used are actual emergency medical equipment and the patients are dressed and packaged with moulage (injury makeup), spine immobilization materials and various equipment. The heart monitors, IV's and enormous presence of the doctor, nurses and paramedics are designed to leave a lasting impression.
The student/actors are members of Students Against Driving Drunk (S.A.D.D.), and are enthusiastically concerned about their fellow students' fun and safety. The presentation is written and produced by Mark D. Bostrom, M.S., a former paramedic turned fitness consultant and personal trainer. Mark was asked to produce and organize the presentation by S.A.D.D. sponsor Harvey Foster, Hersey Football Coach and retired teacher. This is the second performance of the presentation. The first run was on June 4, 1986. Mark Bostrom was homecoming king at Arlington High School in 1976. A good high school friend of Mark's and 1976 Hersey graduate (Steve Gates) was killed by a drunk driver during the middle of his sophomore year in college. These presentations are for Steve, too.
