PLATFORM ISSUES The most important Internet software is the web browser, which includes two leading applications: Internet Explorer and Netscape. Both are available on Windows and Macintosh computers. America Online has its own version of Explorer, however, you can also use the independent version of Internet Explorer after you sign on for a session with America Online. Other important software names are Java and Javascript. Java is a separate application that many web sites use to spice up their web sites. Unfortunately many of these JAVA applications fail for many reasons. At worst they cause computers to freeze or crash. Sometimes the Java applications control the menus or cause a computer to lose its expected cursor. For example, the cursor does not change from an arrow to a finger when the mouse position is supposed indicate it has been dragged over a link on a web page. Sometimes the Java applications, just don't work, slow the computer dramatically or cause error messages to pop up. Javascript is built in to the later versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape. It performs many behind-the-scenes actions for a web site, including pop-up buttons, real-time date and time information, specific window sizes and imbedded math calculations on web pages. It is generally more reliable than Java, but occasionally causes error messages to pop up on the screen. For all plug-ins available on the Internet, check out the BrowserWatch Plug-in Plaza from Internet.com. See also Netscape: Browser Plug-ins. |
