Component Details

Why It's Important

Manufacturer
Apple Computer
Home Versions:
iMac,iBook

The one and only, Good Customer Service

Processor
G3 or G4
iMac G4700 MHz
iBook G3 600 MHz
PowerBook G4 1 GHz

G4 -- PowerMac G4 400, 450, 500 MHz

Processor speed determines how fast the computer calculates numbers and draws graphics. Faster processors open windows faster, present web pages faster (also limited by connection speed), calculates spreadsheets faster.

L2 Cache
512K (1 MB on PowerMacs) backside Level 2 or greater

L2 Cache helps the processor run faster.

Operating System
Mac OS 9 (Mac OS X due 2001)

Current operating system shipping on Macintosh computers.

RAM
256 MB

More RAM means you can open more programs simultaneously without overloading system resources. More RAM helps you work faster.

Hard Drive
20, 40, 80 GB (gigabytes) or greater

More Hard Drive space means you can store more programs and data on your computer. Text and spreadsheets take a lot less space than programs and pictures. If you have a fast connection to the Internet you will have less need to store things on your own computer because you know you have fast access and can download it again. On the other hand, you might have a tendency to store favorite movie previews, pictures, large pdf files (government documents, investor documents) just because you can.

CDROM (20X or greater), CD-RW (4X or greater, DVD ROM

CDROM's store off-the shelf data (encyclopedias clip art, program installation disks), but you can't store your data. CD-RW's can read CDROM's, but can also store your data from your hard drive for back-up. DVD ROM's can read CDROM's but can also read DVD movies and newer data disks that store a lot more than CDROM's. You can't store your data from your hard disk on a DVD ROM. The ideal situation is to purchase a computer with a DVD ROM and a CD-RW included. Each drive is located in its own bay.

Iomega Zip Drive

If you don't get a CD-RW, get a Zip Drive for backing up files

10/100 BaseT network card with RJ-45 port

Standard with all Macintosh for computers

All Internet users will eventually have fast connections either via Cable Modem or DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). These connection use the 10/100 BaseT connection. To prevent resource conflicts later, it's best to have the high speed port now. Internet Service Providers (ISP's) are available via one or more of the following: Cable Modem, DSL, and Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS)

Modem v.90

Highest speed modem available on Plain Old Telephone System (POTS). Useful if your high speed connection goes down temporarily or if high speed Internet is not available in your location.

USB 2 Port
Universal Serial Bus

Most computers have 2 or more USB ports. They can be used for scanners, digital cameras and printers. The USB port has eased expansion. A USB hub can be purchased later that allows additional USB devices.

Color Monitor
17-inch or greater, .28 mm Dot Pitch

iBook has built-in 12.1-inch or 14.1-inch.
iMac has built-in 15-inch or 17-inch
PowerBook has built-in 15.2-inch

You are more productive with a larger monitor because there is less scrolling around. LCD flat panels are still too expensive for most people. Dot Pitch greater than .28mm starts to get fuzzy (hard on eyes).

Video Graphics Card and Sound Card

Most home computers with above specifications come with adequate Video Graphics Card and Sound Card. Video Graphics Card should be able to present 1024 X 768 pixel resolution or greater and 16 million colors on a 17-inch monitor.

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) "Battery Backup"

330W (Watts) or greater
500 VA (Volt-Amps) or greater
Manufacturers include
APC (American Power Conversion) and Belkin

Blackouts, power brownouts (undervoltage), and overvoltage can crash, freeze or damage the computer. Data loss or corrupted system files which take several hours to fix can also occur from power disturbances. In most UPS devices the battery takes over when the commercial power is not acceptable.
