Glutamine
[Don't confuse this supplement with glucosamine]
[See also Protein, Bars & Shakes -- glutamine is a common ingredient in these products]

Glutamine is the most common amino acid in the human body and is involved in the most metabolic processes of any amino acid. Glutamine is readily converted to glucose when needed by the body to meet energy demands. Glutamine is a source of fuel for the cellular lining of the intestines, which can erode without glutamine. Glutamine is important for functioning of white blood cells and the immune system.

Intense exercise lowers blood levels of glutamine, which can remain chronically low with overtraining. Glutamine is used to maintain muscle mass for high performance athletes. Glutamine is also used to prevent post-exercise infection from loss of energy and structural nutrition components lost during high energy consumption.

Glutamine is a component of most protein shakes and protein drinks used for body building and muscle mass maintenance. It can also be added alone as a powder to orange juice or other drinks (especially for variety from daily protein shakes). Glutamine is consumed consistently, on a daily basis, to maintain muscle and lean body tissue.

At 2 grams per day, glutamine may raise levels of Growth Hormone.

Glutamine may help recharge muscle glycogen storage following intense training.

Glutamine is given intravenously for individuals who are critically ill, have had major surgery, or who have been seriously injured.

Glutamine is used in combination with arginine and HMB {beta hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate) for HIV/AIDS support.
