A
mixture of boxing punches and martial arts kicks,
Tae-Bo is fun and easy. One of the best elements of
this two-tape set is that the first tape (which is
40 minutes long), Tae-Bo: Instructional, lays out
the movements you need to successfully complete a
workout. Once you've mastered the steps, you won't
have to fast-forward through half the tape to get
to the workout, nor will your workout be slowed
down by the repeated lessons. After you feel
comfortable with the movements (and they're really
quite easy to follow; nothing too complicated to
trip you up), you're ready to move on to Tae-Bo:
Basics, a 27-minute workout (5 minutes of warm-up,
18 minutes of Tae-Bo, and 4 minutes of cool-down)

The
session includes 6 minutes of warm-up (some of
which is vigorous enough that total beginners
should plan to take it very easy), 25 minutes of
the interval-and-active-recovery workout, and 7
minutes of cool-down and stretch. True beginners,
while given options of following some low-impact
moves, may find the overall intensity level too
high. The upper body doesn't get much attention
here, but this video is topnotch for lower-body
toning and overall cardio fitness.

Smith's
Latin Rhythm Workout, released in the fall of 1999,
capitalizes on America's love affair with Ricky
Martin and Latin music in general.

Insets
give helpful alignment tips. You start with an
8-minute warm up, then you work your arms with
weights for 6 minutes. Four different aerobic
segments follow, totaling 30 minutes. Most of the
aerobic moves are simple and frequently repeated,
with no difficult choreography until the last
segment, which becomes dancier. After the aerobics,
you do standing legwork for 5 minutes, add weights
for another 5 minutes, and cool down for 6 minutes.
At the end of the video, Smith explains a nutrition
program for weight loss.

This
step workout is broken into three segments for
different levels of stamina and complexity. You can
do just level 1 (12 minutes) or continue through
level 2, for 22 minutes, or through level 3, for 32
minutes. Within each segment, Keli Roberts's
assistants demonstrate different intensities, so
you can work at your own pace as you build
endurance.
